Melissa Light

RYT 200

Melissa's journey with yoga began in 2009 after receiving a new health diagnosis. She was searching for ways to cope with and manage stress, as well as regain her strength. She quickly learned that yoga was more than just a physical practice, as she began to notice changes on a much deeper level. Melissa decided to deepen her personal practice and received her yoga certification in July 2013 through Radiance Yoga Studio located in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.

Melissa likes to explore fun sequencing and moving the body in different ways, using the physical practice of yoga as a movement in meditation. Classes vary week to week, depending on the focus or theme for the week, as well as, catering to what the students might need. Melissa invites her students to marinate within the breath and the pose - to really embody what is happening internally. She always encourages students to meet themselves where they’re at in the moment and to let go of any expectations. She enjoys using yoga props in class and offers modifications and/or stages to poses, so that students can explore what feels best in their bodies.

Melissa continues to attend workshops to deepen her practice, as she believes we are forever students of the practice. She has attended workshops/trainings with Shiva Rea, Matt Giordano, Justin Wolfer and Dice Iida Klein. She also has participated in a seminar with the Veterans Yoga Project and is trauma informed to offer mindful resilience yoga classes to those that suffer from PTSD and related challenges.

Melissa’s hope in sharing yoga with others is for them to discover their own inner light and to find the peace that’s deep within each and everyone of us, which in turn can be shared with the world.

Melissa Light instructs the following:
  • Slow Flow Vinyasa
  • In this class you will flow from one physical posture to the next using the breath as your guide and anchor (Vinyasa). This connection between movement and breath allows your practice to become a moving meditation. At times, stillness is found in order to fully settle into a physical posture. Some yoga experience is recommended. However, beginners are welcome. Modifications (the use of props and stages to poses) are incorporated in order for students to work at all levels of ability. A warm, safe, and fun environment is held throughout class. You will leave feeling relaxed, balanced, and renewed!

  • Restorative AcuYoga
  • Join Danielle Dupell, licensed Acupuncturist and Melissa Light, RYT-200/Health Coach, for an afternoon of restoration and relaxation.

Restorative AcuYoga is a blend of restorative yoga and acupuncture. During this three hour workshop you will be guided through a restorative yoga sequence, which will be followed by a balancing (optional) ear acupuncture treatment received during a 40 to 50 minute savasana (final resting pose).

Restorative yoga is a practice that helps you develop a deeper understanding of your ability to relax. It invites you to explore your capacity to be present, both within the body and mind, while approaching this space with an open heart. During this practice you will be guided through a sequence, exploring both passive and active poses, with the support of props (e.g. blocks, blankets, bolsters). It is by remaining present that we’re able to face the dualities in life, working our way through darkness in order to find the light.

Ear acupuncture involves the insertion of one to two acupuncture needles (which are thin, solid, single-use, and sterile) into various auricular points on each ear. The ear holds a microsystem, which means that there is a point on the ear that correlates to the entire body. The insertion of these needles elicits a therapeutic response and can improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Each month these workshops will focus on different energetics housed within the body that can become out of balance with the fluctuations within the seasons, as well as by daily stressors. By targeting the body from an energetic standpoint, it invites one to syncopate with nature’s rhythms, bringing mind, body, and spirit back into a state of balance.

  • Gentle Yoga
  • The purpose and intention of this class is to release, unwind, let be, relax, and slow down. Think of it as 90 minutes of nourishment. This class helps release tension that is held within the body due to habitual patterns of movement. Each class focuses on the whole body. However, some weeks we may experiment with a stronger focus in an area of the body that we often overuse and/or neglect. Breath work, meditation and guided relaxations will also be weaved into the practice.

This class is open to all levels and abilities.

  • Yoga for Athletes & Active Lifestyles
  • This class is designed to help athletes and those that lead active lifestyles to develop greater strength, flexibility and mental focus. We will focus on the areas most overused and prone to injury for athletic bodies. Hips, hamstrings, calves and feet will get special attention, though the practice will engage the whole body. Come to class expecting a sequence of asana to build core strength, balance and flexibility, as well as pranayamas to improve focus and de-stress.

Even though this class will target issues that an athletic body faces specifically, it's still a well rounded class that anyone can attend whether an athlete or not.
